Uchisar Castle in winter

Snow on the honeycombed rock, Mount Erciyes white on the horizon and almost nobody on the summit. Winter is a fine time for Uchisar, if you plan around short days and slippery stairs.

From November to March, Uchisar Castle gets cold mornings, early sunsets and the occasional snowfall that turns the whole valley white. The rock stays open, the red tours keep running, and the crowds thin out except over the holidays.

Here is what changes for a winter visit in 2026-27, with sunset times we calculated for Uçhisar and temperature averages from the Turkish weather service.

The quick answer

Uchisar Castle lists the same hours all year, 07:00 to 20:00, and the ticket is still paid in lira at the kiosk. Sunset comes as early as 17:20 in December, and average lows sit below freezing from December to February. Wear boots with grip for the steps, go up in the afternoon, and be down before dark. Red tours that stop here run through the winter.

Is Uchisar Castle open in winter 2026-27?

Yes. The municipality lists opening hours of 07:00 to 20:00, with no separate winter timetable, and the ticket is sold at the kiosk in lira.

The Uçhisar Municipality shows "Kale Açılış 07:00 / Kale Kapanış 20:00" on its castle page, and nothing on its site announces shorter winter hours. The castle is municipal, so the ministry's winter schedule for Göreme and the underground cities does not apply to it.

The price is not published. Travellers report 320 to 400 TL for foreign adults in 2025-26, roughly €7 to €9, and Turkish citizens pay less. The Museum Pass is not valid. After heavy snow, call the municipality on 0384 219 20 05 before driving up. Our ticket guide has the full detail.

What time is sunset at Uchisar Castle from November to March?

Between about 17:20 and 19:00. The earliest sunsets fall in early December; by the end of March the sun sets after 19:00.

We calculated these times for Uçhisar (UTC+3). They agree within a minute with timeanddate.com for nearby Nevşehir. The temperatures are long-term averages for Nevşehir from the Turkish State Meteorological Service, measured from 1959 to 2025.

Plan the climb backwards from sunset. The steps take 10 to 15 minutes, the light on the summit is best in the last 45 minutes, and you want the descent done while you can still see the stairs.

Is the climb safe with snow and ice?

With care, yes. The 200-odd steps are uneven tuff and stone, they can ice over on shaded turns, and the railing is at the top.

The climb is short but steep, and parts pass through narrow tunnels. Snow packs into ice where people tread it down, and the shaded north side stays slippery longest. Go up after the sun has been on the rock for a few hours, around midday or early afternoon. Boots with real tread help more than anything else; cheap slip-on spikes are better still.

Coming down is the risky part. Take it slowly, keep one hand free, and skip the summit if the stairs look glazed. Do not walk down through Pigeon Valley after dark in winter. The path to Göreme is about an hour of mud or ice with no lights. Take the town bus instead, which runs about every 30 minutes; our getting there guide has the details.

Do Cappadocia red tours still run in winter?

Yes. The red tours that stop at Uchisar Castle run through the winter, with the same stops, earlier finishes and often smaller groups.

Snow can shorten the walks. A guest on the classic red route wrote in March 2022: "Although the weather made it difficult to wander far as too much snow." The same guest ended up with the guide to themselves because nobody else had booked, which is the upside of a quiet season.

Check the minutes at the castle before you book. The classic route stops 45 minutes, the red small-group tour only 15, which is a photo stop, and a private guide and car lets you decide on the day, a real advantage when the steps are icy. Ministry sites close earlier now: Göreme Open Air Museum shuts at 17:45 with last tickets at 17:15. More in our post on 2026 museum prices.

What should you wear for Uchisar Castle in winter?

Warm layers, a windproof jacket, a hat, gloves and boots with grip. The summit is exposed, and it feels several degrees colder than the village.

Average highs in Nevşehir are 4.0°C in January and 6.2°C in December. On the summit there is nothing between you and the wind off the plateau, and you will stand still for photos. A thin down layer under a shell does the job and packs away for the tunnels.

Bring a phone torch or headlamp if you go up for sunset, gloves that work on a touchscreen, and a spare battery, since the cold drains phones fast. Sunglasses help on bright snowy days, when the light off the white valley is harsh.

Your own guide and car, so the castle gets as long as the weather allows.

How busy is Uchisar at Christmas, New Year and the Turkish school break?

Busier than the rest of winter. Expect full hotels from about 24 December to 2 January, and Turkish families during the school break from 25 January to 5 February 2027.

Hotels across Cappadocia run New Year packages with gala dinners, and the region fills with Turkish and international visitors for the holiday week. The castle summit is small, so a few coachloads at sunset make it feel crowded. 1 January is a public holiday in Türkiye.

Turkish schools break for the semester from 25 January to 5 February 2027, according to the 2026-27 calendar summarised by liseler.org.tr, and there is a mid-term week from 16 to 20 November 2026. Early December and mid January are the quietest weeks. Go then if you want the rock to yourself and can live with the cold.
