The classic red route, via Zelve

A small-group red tour that gives Uchisar Castle 45 minutes and lists its ticket as included, then swaps the crowded Göreme museum for the abandoned valley of Zelve. It's the cheapest way in this list to get a real castle visit plus the north valleys, as long as you pick the right option.

Cappadocia Red Tour: Classic Route

About this experience

This is the red route with a twist: instead of the Göreme Open Air Museum, the group spends 90 minutes at Zelve, a valley of cave houses and churches that stayed a working village until 1952. One guest put it plainly: "this one goes to Zelve instead". Add Paşabağ, Çavuşin, a long lunch-and-pottery stop in Avanos and Devrent Valley, and you have a full, unhurried day with groups of 15 at most. The rating is 5.0 from 568 reviews.

For this site the important line is the first stop. Uchisar Castle gets 45 minutes, and the itinerary marks it "admission ticket included". That is enough time to climb the 200-odd steps, take in the 360-degree view from the top and come down without running. The fine print matters, though. The listing's own inclusions mention only the vehicle and the guide, and it sells four options: All Included, Without Lunch, Guide & Transfer and a Private option. Book All Included if you want lunch and the tickets covered, and confirm the castle ticket in a message to the operator after booking. On the cheaper options, expect to pay the gates yourself (the castle kiosk is reported at 320 to 400 TL in 2025-26, roughly €7 to €9).

Going alone would mean a taxi or a car: Uchisar is a walk from Göreme, Zelve and Avanos are not. The $27 on the booking page is the per-person rate for the largest group size; two travellers pay more each, and you see the real price after entering your numbers. Guests praise the guides (Elif, Bayram and Ali come up again and again) and say the pottery studio is the only sales stop. One reviewer with a 4-star rating found the pottery staff pushy, so go in ready to say no.

  • Zelve's abandoned cave village instead of the busy Göreme museum

What guests say

★★★★★

The lunch was surprisingly good for a tour lunch. We appreciated that there weren't many comercial stops, except for the pottery studio where honestly they were not even very pushy about selling.

Most red tours tend to go to Goreme Open Air Museum, but this one goes to Zelve instead. Zelve is much more interesting and in my opinion, the number one MUST DO while in Cappadocia.

Our guide Eli was so enthusiastic and interesting about everywhere we visited. Her English is outstanding. We were given the right balance of information and free time to explore each stop.

Ali's guide was very good. Now you know the history of Cappadocia! It was very helpful to be able to keep up with the pace of my 5-year-old.

Tips before you book

  • Pick the All Included option and check, in writing, that the castle and museum tickets are covered. The cheapest options are guide and transport only.
  • Enter 2 travellers before you compare: the $27 headline is the largest-group rate.
  • Message the operator the evening before. A guest heard nothing after the booking confirmation and worried when the pickup ran late.
  • Bring a little cash for drinks and tips; they're not included on any option.
  • Climb Uchisar first and fast. 45 minutes is fine for the summit if you don't linger at the souvenir stalls at the bottom.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Uchisar Castle ticket really included?

The itinerary marks the castle stop "admission ticket included", and 45 minutes is enough to climb. The listing's inclusions only name the vehicle and guide, and four options exist, so book All Included and confirm the castle ticket with the operator. If it isn't covered, foreign visitors pay a few hundred lira at the kiosk.

Does this tour visit the Göreme Open Air Museum?

No. This route goes to Zelve Open Air Museum instead (90 minutes), plus Paşabağ, Çavuşin, Avanos and Devrent. If you want Göreme's frescoed churches, look at the small-group red tour.

Why does the price go up when I add travellers?

It doesn't go up; it goes down per person as the group grows. $27 is the rate for the largest group size. A couple pays more each, and Viator shows the exact figure once you enter 2 travellers.

Is lunch included?

Only on the All Included option, where guests describe a buffet in Avanos as "surprisingly good for a tour lunch". The Without Lunch and Guide & Transfer options leave it out.
