The Pigeon Valley walk

The best free thing to do at Uchisar starts where the castle ends. A sandy path drops from the village through orchards and carved dovecotes all the way to Göreme.

Pigeon Valley, Güvercinlik Vadisi in Turkish, links Uçhisar and Göreme in one long gentle slope. The walk costs nothing, needs no guide and pairs perfectly with the castle climb. Walk it in the right direction and it is almost all downhill.

Below: distances and times from local route guides such as LocalisTR, where the trail starts at each end, the bus back, and what to carry. If you'd rather see the valley from a car window with a guide, the tours that stop at it are at the end.

The quick answer

Start in Uçhisar and walk down to Göreme: about 4 to 4.5 km and roughly an hour of walking, 1.5 to 2 hours with photo stops. The trail begins near the Pigeon Valley viewpoint at the edge of Uçhisar and ends on the western side of Göreme. There is no water and little shade on the way, so carry a litre each and wear shoes with grip. A town bus every 30 minutes, 70 TL, takes you back up.

How long is the Pigeon Valley walk from Uçhisar to Göreme?

About 4 to 4.5 km one way. Allow an hour of walking, or 1.5 to 2 hours if you stop for photos.

LocalisTR rates it 1 out of 5 for difficulty and times it at about 60 minutes from Uçhisar. The sign at the Uçhisar trailhead gives 4,095 metres and a generous 3.5 hours, according to a 2026 Turkish trail guide. Most people land somewhere in between: the path is easy, but the views keep stopping you.

The height difference is real. Uçhisar village sits at about 1,270 metres and Göreme at about 1,100, so you lose some 150 to 200 metres over the walk. Downhill, you barely notice. Uphill in July heat, you will.

Which direction should you walk Pigeon Valley?

Downhill, from Uçhisar to Göreme. Ride up, climb the castle, then let the valley carry you back.

Uçhisar is the high end of the valley, so starting there turns the walk into a gentle descent. The easiest plan if you stay in Göreme: take the town bus up from the bus station (about 10 minutes, 70 TL as of October 2026), buy a castle ticket and climb, then walk down to Göreme for lunch. Uphill from Göreme is perfectly possible, just slower and hotter, and best kept for cool mornings.

Coming from further away? With a private guide and car you can ask to be dropped at the Uçhisar trailhead and collected at the Göreme end, a good trade if you want the walk without the bus.

Where does the Pigeon Valley trail start in Uçhisar and end in Göreme?

In Uçhisar, by the Pigeon Valley viewpoint terrace on the Göreme side of the village. In Göreme, at the western edge of town, a short walk from the bus station.

Uçhisar end. From the castle, walk down through the village towards the Göreme road, about 10 to 15 minutes, to the Pigeon Valley viewpoint. It is a terrace with souvenir stalls, a tree hung with blue evil-eye beads, and a signed path dropping into the valley. If you arrive by bus, ask the driver to let you off at the Pigeon Valley viewpoint (Güvercinlik Vadisi).

Göreme end. The trail comes out on the western side of Göreme, off the road towards Uçhisar, a short walk from the bus station and the centre. Starting from Göreme, ask for the path to Uçhisar, or follow the signs from the road; an offline map makes the first junctions obvious.

Why is it called Pigeon Valley?

For the hundreds of dovecotes carved into its walls. Farmers kept pigeons for their droppings, used as fertiliser for the vineyards until the 1970s.

Look up as you walk and you will see rows of small square holes high on the rock, some framed with white or ochre paint. Behind each is a carved room lined with nesting niches. Cappadocia's volcanic soil is light and poor, and pigeon guano fed its vines, orchards and apricot trees. Pigeon droppings were also used to brighten the colours of cave-church frescoes, Wikipedia notes. Chemical fertiliser ended the trade, and most dovecotes now stand empty or half-used.

Uchisar Castle itself is riddled with pigeon holes, which is why the valley below took the name. The painted facades you see are mostly late, from Ottoman times or later; nobody can give the valley a single founding date.

Down in the valley the path runs through trees and shrubs, with the dovecote walls above.

How do you get back after the walk?

By the Göreme-Uçhisar town bus, about every 30 minutes until the evening, or by taxi for a few hundred lira.

The municipal bus run by Göreme Belediyesi leaves Göreme bus station for Uçhisar every half hour from 07:00 to 19:30, then at 20:30 and 22:30, per LocalisTR's timetable. The fare was 70 TL in October 2026, paid in cash to the driver. The Nevşehir to Avanos bus also links the two villages, roughly hourly. Times change; check the board at the stop.

Taxis wait at Göreme bus station. Nevşehir's 2026 tariff is 45 TL to start plus 45 TL a kilometre, with a 200 TL minimum, according to AirportNavi. That puts the 4 km ride at around 250 TL on the meter. Agree the price before you get in if the driver doesn't run it.

Is the trail easy to follow, and what should you bring?

Easy underfoot but not well marked: side paths branch off everywhere. Bring an offline map, a litre of water each, sun protection and shoes with grip.

  • Navigation. Waymarks are few and side trails many. Download the area in Organic Maps, Maps.me or Google Maps before you set off. If in doubt, keep heading downhill towards Göreme.
  • Water and shade. There is no water source on the way, and much of the path is exposed. In summer, start before 10:00 or after 16:00.
  • Footwear. Fine sand over tuff is slippery, and one short steep section has a rope to hold. Trainers with tread are fine; flip-flops are not.
  • After rain. The path turns to sticky mud and the tuff gets slick. Give it a day to dry, or keep to the viewpoint.
  • Daylight. Finish before dark. The valley has no lighting, and a twisted ankle down there is a long way from a road.

Watch the sunset from the top, then take the bus down. The valley is no place to be in the dark.

Can you combine Pigeon Valley with the castle climb and sunset?

Yes, in two ways: walk in the morning and come back for sunset by bus, or climb the castle late, watch the sunset, and ride the bus down.

Morning plan. Bus up around 08:30, climb the castle while the steps are quiet (it opens at 07:00), then walk down to Göreme by late morning, before the heat. Return by bus in the late afternoon for sunset from the free viewpoint terrace, or buy a second ticket for the summit.

Afternoon plan. Walk up from Göreme in the cooler late afternoon, buy a ticket and catch sunset from the top, then take the bus back down. The castle closes at 20:00, so in June and July sunset comes close to closing time; check the day's sunset before you rely on it. Our pick is the morning plan: downhill, cooler and with the light behind you. For the sunset itself, see the sunset guide, and for the ticket, Uchisar Castle tickets.

Which tours include Pigeon Valley?

Four tours on this site stop at Pigeon Valley, but always at the viewpoint, for 15 to 30 minutes. None walks the full trail.

On a tour, Pigeon Valley means the terrace at the top of the valley, with Uchisar Castle behind and the dovecotes below. Good photos, no hike. Here is how long each listing stays:

TourFromPigeon ValleyUchisar Castle
Private guide and car$189 per group30 min, flexible30 min, ticket extra
All-in-one private tour$25815 min30 min, ticket included
Red tour with an underground city$1830 min, viewpointNo stop

The $18 tour is the cheapest way to see the valley with a guide, but it skips the castle, and entrance fees and lunch come on top. The private car is the one that can bend: ask your guide to drop you at the Uçhisar trailhead and wait in Göreme. The low from-prices on the shared and all-in-one tours are group rates; a couple pays more per person.
